KUALA TERENGGANU<\/strong> – A grandfather, who is also a Rela member, was sentenced by the Sessions Court yesterday to 25 years\u2019 jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for raping a 12-year-old relative.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old man from Manir, here, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at the girl\u2019s house about 10pm on June 14.<\/p>\n

In sentencing the man, who has three grandchildren, judge Che Mohd Zulkifli Yusof told him: “At your age you are supposed to uphold good values but instead you have committed a beastly act against an innocent child young enough to be your own grandaughter.”<\/p>\n

Earlier during mitigation, the man, who was unrepresented, pleaded with the court to spare him a heavy sentence.<\/p>\n

To a question by Zulkifli, the man said he became close to the girl two years ago but insisted that except for that one time, he had never sexually abused her.<\/p>\n

He said he raped the girl while her parents were out.<\/p>\n

He also told Zulkifli that he suffered from a series of illnesses, but this did not stop the judge from giving him a tongue lashing.<\/p>\n

Zulkifli told the accused that he had betrayed the trust of the a person whom he was supposed to protect.<\/p>\n

According to the facts, the girl’s parents had lodged a police report on June 23 after they were informed of the rape by the victim’s counselling teacher.<\/p>\n
