The tragedy that has befallen the passengers and crew of the ill-fated flight MH 17 has once again put Malaysia under the global spotlight.An entire nation was gripped by the sentiment, \u201cOh no! Not again!\u201d with the breaking news that a MAS commercial jetliner had been shot down in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Indeed the mystery of the whereabouts of the missing flight MH 370 remains unresolved; yet now, MH 17 with 298 crew and passengers on board was cruelly and mercilessly shot out of the sky.<\/p>\n

Aliran, as with many other concerned Malaysians, calls for a\u00a0thorough and independent probe\u00a0into this tragedy. As highlighted in the statement, \u201cIt is especially heinous and reprehensible if this mid-air tragedy that has destroyed innocent lives is the outcome of a proxy war involving\u00a0major world powers.<\/p>\n

\"140718-mh17-wreckage_0\"<\/a>\u201dIn this the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims and\u00a0those of other faiths\u00a0alike are called to reflect on the blessings we have received – to be thankful and grateful – and to share with one another.<\/p>\n

But the violence and atrocities committed in so many parts of the world certainly run contrary to this spirit. In\u00a0Aliran’s facebook page,\u00a0there is a poster\u00a0bearing\u00a0these words, \u201cIf all religions teach Peace, then why can’t we achieve Peace?\u201d<\/p>\n

Those who are guilty of promoting hatred, perpetuating and glorifying violence ought to do a lot of soul searching.<\/p>\n

The ongoing\u00a0Israeli-Palestinian conflict \u2013\u00a0and now the Israeli ground offensive in Gaza –\u00a0has led to the loss of many innocent lives,\u00a0including\u00a0children.\u00a0So far 640 Palestinians and 31 Israelis reportedly have been killed. Some of the killings havebeen indiscriminate, and there’s even a report that a rehabilitation centre for the disabled in Gaza\u00a0was\u00a0bombed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAliran abhor’s the violence perpetrated by both sides of the conflict and argues that it is imperative that the\u00a0underlying causes\u00a0of the Palestinian resistance against the occupying forces of Israel be tackled seriously by the various stakeholders in this bloody conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201dViolence can take many forms and extreme poverty and deprivation suffered by the marginalised is a violation\u00a0of\u00a0human dignity. Hence the homeless and hungry deserve our understanding and support.<\/p>\n

Efforts made to provide the poor with a decent meal by concerned\u00a0Good\u00a0Samaritans should be lauded and encouraged.On the other hand, placing\u00a0a ban on ‘soup kitchens’\u00a0within certain zones is inhumane \u2013 an indecent attempt to paint a rosy picture and hide the harsh reality that exists.\u00a0The\u00a0government should instead study the root causes of poverty and try to alleviate it rather than ‘conceal’ the problem. – Aliran<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
