National news agency Bernama confirmed today the suspension of one of its journalists following allegations that he had plagiarised two articles from Indonesian newspaper Jakarta Globe.<\/p>\n
Bernama editor-in-chief Datuk Zulkefli Salleh said a probe on the matter has also been launched.<\/p>\n
\u201cBernama will investigate allegations that its reporter plagiarised news from Jakartaglobe and the reporter in question has been suspended \u2014 Editor-in-Chief,\u201d Bernama tweeted on its account @bernamadotcom today.<\/p>\n
In a report on its website today, Jakarta Globe said it first discovered the alleged plagiarism when it found the contents of its article on the Indonesian presidential election reproduced and credited to Bernama.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian paper compared its own piece \u2014 \u201cIn Closing Debate, Joko Promises Bureaucratic \u2018Breakthrough,\u2019 While Prabowo Strives for A Dignified Nation\u201d \u2014 to Bernama\u2019s version, \u201cJoko Promises Bureaucratic \u2018Breakthrough,\u2019 While Prabowo Strives for \u2018A Dignified Nation\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n
Putting up a screen capture comparing both articles, Jakarta Globe noted that the two articles were found to be near-identical, save for one line crediting a quote to the Jakarta-based daily.<\/p>\n
While Jakarta Globe\u2019s article had the bylines of their reporters Josua Gantan and Andrea Wijaya, the Bernama version had Elmi Rizal Alias\u2019s byline.<\/p>\n
The Bernama version was republished by a third party and credited to the Malaysian outlet.<\/p>\n
The discovery had prompted Jakarta Globe to scrutinise Bernama\u2019s pieces for further instances of plagiarism, which it said it found in another of its articles, \u201cHatta Says Indonesia Should Take Advantage of its \u2018Demographic Bonus\u2019\u201d, being the source of Elmi Rizal\u2019s \u201cinspiration\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe same story was found on Bernama\u2019s website with the slightly altered title \u2018Indonesia Should Take Advantage of Its Demographic Bonus \u2014Hatta\u2019,\u201d said Jakarta Globe.<\/p>\n
