Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) said today that it withdrew a motion on hudud in the state legislative assembly because it was PAS\u2019s responsibility to implement the Islamic penal code in the state.<\/p>\n

Selangor opposition leader Datuk Shamsudin Lias pointed out that the Islamist party could count on BN\u2019s 12 assemblymen if it needed support to approve any motion or Bill on hudud in the state legislative assembly.<\/p>\n

With the 12 from BN, 15 from PAS and 10 from PKR, there would technically be 37 Muslim representatives who make up the majority in the 56-seat Selangor state assembly.<\/p>\n

\"dun<\/a>\u201cIf PAS Selangor doesn\u2019t take any significant steps towards implementing hudud in Selangor after this, then it\u2019s clear that PAS is hypocritical as they are lying to their voters and to themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it shows that they are not serious and are more afraid of spoiling the consultation process in Pakatan than their campaign promises,\u201d Shamsudin said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Umno\u2019s Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik retracted today his motion for the Selangor government to conduct a study on the feasibility of implementing hudud in the country\u2019s most developed state, just a day after Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh approved it for debate in the next assembly sitting.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough this motion has been withdrawn, it should be a wake-up call to PAS, especially Selangor PAS, on their responsibility and accountability towards their pledges in implementing hudud,\u201d said Shamsudin.<\/p>\n

He said a feasibility study on hudud could evaluate the acceptance of Selangor residents, majority of whom are Muslims, for the Islamic criminal law, the legal obstacles and current enactments, the readiness of the authorities and the judiciary, technical aspects like evidence, charging and punishment, the implementation of hudud in other countries, as well as suggestions for improvement and the implementation phase.<\/p>\n
