Members of Parliament in the Federal Territory have been receiving hundreds of complaints from residents agitated by the recent proposed assessment rate hike by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.<\/p>\n
Several MPs said they had been getting the complaints through all forms of communication.<\/p>\n
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng had people walking up to him voicing their objections while he was having a cuppa at a coffee shop.<\/p>\n
This was on top of phone calls, text messages and emails sent to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn behalf of the residents in Segambut, we strongly object to this reassessment. The people just don\u2019t want it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m drafting an objection letter to be given to the residents for them to file their complaints with City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lim said all 11 MPs within Kuala Lumpur would meet Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib to present and discuss the public\u2019s objection to the proposal on Thursday. <\/p>\n
Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Loon said City Hall should not raise assessment rates beyond what residents could afford.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is City Hall\u2019s duty to provide services to maintain the city. This increment is unreasonable as we are all taxpayers,\u201d Fong said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe excuse that the assessment rates have not been evaluated for 21 years is not valid and not a reason for them to make such a proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said that the new assessment rates were unfair.<\/p>\n
She called for a press conference in Sri Petaling yesterday morning to discuss with residents associations on how to bring their voice to Parliament.<\/p>\n
Kok is also drafting a protest letter that will be given to residents in her constituency.<\/p>\n
