KUALA TERENGGANU: A building contractor was today ordered to pay a fine of RM10,000 or three months’ jail in default for carrying out construction work without being registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).<\/p>\n
The accused, Abdul Rahim Osman, 52, had earlier pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Wan Fadhilah Nor Wan Idris when the charge was read out to him.<\/p>\n
According to the facts of the case, on last Nov 5, Abdul Rahim who was also the proprietor of RHM Services as a building contractor, had built the West Stand roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, here, which collapsed on Feb 20.<\/p>\n
However, the accused who had acted as a sub-contractor in the project, failed to register with CIDB. As a result, he was charged under Sub-Section of the CIDB Malaysia Act 1994 and punishable under Section 29 of the same act.<\/p>\n
The accused pleaded for a minimum fine, claiming that he did not know that he had to register with CIDB and thought that only the main contractor must register with the board.<\/p>\n
Rahim was not represented while CIDB prosecuting officer Abdul Razak Husin prosecuted in the case.<\/p>\n
On Feb 20 this year, five construction workers were injured, three of them seriously, when the old frame of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium roof collapsed while under repair.<\/p>\n
Repair works for the stadium had to be undertaken at a cost of RM15 million after its main roof costing RM292 million collapsed on June 2, 2009, destroying 50 per cent of the stadium structure.<\/p>\n
Disciplinary action was taken by CIDB against the main contractor on April 11 for appointing a sub-contractor that was not registered with CIDB. — BERNAMA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
