PAS has contested every general election since its establishment in 1951, with its grassroots strength keeping the party politically relevant despite its limited financial resources, says its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.<\/p>\n
Takiyuddin, who is also Perikatan Nasional secretary-general, said Pas had now participated in 15 general elections without missing a single one.<\/p>\n
“Although we are not a wealthy party, we have a strong grassroots base.<\/p>\n
“People may see us as ordinary and not as political figures of great stature, but we have remained strong because of our grassroots support,” he said at a current issues ceramah here tonight.<\/p>\n
Takiyuddin, who is Kota Baru MP, said PAS first secured the trust of Kelantan voters in the 1959 general election, demonstrating its commitment to the people’s welfare during its administration of the state.<\/p>\n
He also said there was no reason for non-Muslims to fear PAS rule in Kelantan, adding that Islamic laws in the state applied only to Muslims.<\/p>\n
“For example, the state government has never banned alcohol. However, we regulate it because we do not want Muslims to consume alcohol.<\/p>\n
“Kelantan has Syariah laws, and Muslims who consume alcohol can face up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM5,000 and six strokes of the cane.<\/p>\n
“These Islamic laws apply only to Muslims,” he said.<\/p>\n
Takiyuddin said PAS had governed Kelantan since 1990 and had now administered the state for 36 years, spanning eight terms.<\/p>\n
He said the party had also secured support from non-Malay voters, particularly when contesting under broader coalitions such as Pakatan Rakyat and Perikatan Nasional.<\/p>\n
“Kelantanese have continued to support Pas. They have not changed their support because they see advantages, whether because of the leadership or the party’s planning and policies,” he said.<\/p>\n
