Amnesty International plans rally to prior to Obama\u2019s Burma visit<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amnesty International is planning a rally to urge President Obama not to forget human rights while in Burma.<\/p>\n

The rally will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 15 outside the White House, in Lafayette Park.<\/p>\n

Amnesty is urging the president to meet with the victims of human rights abuses and with ethnic minority leaders, including the Rohingya, while in Burma. They are also asking the president ot call for an immediate stop to absuses against the Rohingya and other ethnic – Burma Muslim Takforce Facebook.com\/BurmaTaskForce<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

News; Obama to make landmark visit to Myanmar this month<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obama will travel to Myanmar as part of a November 17-20 tour of Southeast Asia that will include stops in Thailand and Cambodia, the White House said on Thursday as it confirmed his first international trip since he won a second term in Tuesday’s election.<\/p>\n

He is going ahead with the trip despite recent sectarian violence in western Myanmar, which has drawn concern from the United States and European Union.<\/p>\n

UN human rights investigators have criticised the quasi-civilian government’s handling of the strife between Buddhists and minority Muslims, and some Myanmar exiles see Obama’s trip as premature before political reforms have been consolidated.<\/p>\n

The visit to Myanmar, the first by a sitting US president, will give Obama a chance to meet President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to encourage the “ongoing democratic transition,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.<\/p>\n

Suu Kyi spent years in detention under the military as the symbol of the pro-democracy movement and was elected to parliament in April.<\/p>\n

Obama’s presence in Myanmar, also known as Burma, will highlight what his administration sees as a first-term foreign policy achievement and a development that could help counter China’s influence in a strategically important region.<\/p>\n

Washington takes some credit for a carrot-and-stick approach that pushed Myanmar’s generals toward democratic change and led to Thinn Sein taking office as reformist president in 2011.<\/p>\n
