Former de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has pledged to help reshape public perception of Pas, describing the party as capable of governing a multicultural Malaysia based on justice and equality.<\/p>\n
Zaid, who officially joined Pas together with 13 other political figures ahead of the Negri Sembilan state election, said he was warmly received by the party’s top leadership when he was admitted as a member last night.<\/p>\n
“They’re warm, sincere and friendly. I will repay their faith. I will work hard to dispel the image of Pas as an extreme anti-democratic party, not suitable for a multicultural Malaysia,” he said.<\/p>\n
The former Kota Baru member of parliament said Pas was, in his view, the only Malay-majority political party with the determination to address inequality, hegemony and preferential treatment based on class.<\/p>\n
“The essence of Islam will be the governing principle,” he said.<\/p>\n
Zaid added that a Pas-led administration would uphold fairness and reject double standards.<\/p>\n
“You will not have, under Pas rule, (a situation) where we are described as equal, but some are more equal than others,” he said.<\/p>\n
He also expressed confidence that Pas would play a leading role in forming the next federal government.<\/p>\n
“Pas will govern Malaysia together with like-minded progressive MPs after the next general election,” he said.<\/p>\n
Zaid’s entry into Pas comes amid a wider political realignment within the opposition bloc following the party’s recent decision to end its political cooperation with Bersatu and pursue broader alliances ahead of upcoming state polls and the next general election.<\/p>\n
His membership was announced alongside 13 other politicians during a Pas event held in conjunction with preparations for the Negri Sembilan election in Seremban.<\/p>\n
Among the others whose memberships were announced were former Negri Sembilan state executive councillor and Ampangan assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohamad Rafie Abdul Malek and former private secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Rahimi Osman.<\/p>\n
Also joining Pas are former Perak state executive councillor and former Bersatu vice-president Datuk Hamidah Othman, and former Negeri Sembilan Amanah chairman Dr Rosli Yaakup, who is also a former Pas commissioner for the state. NST<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
