Villagers beat up cable thief

KUALA TERENGGANU: A cable thief was badly beaten up by a group of angry villagers when they caught him stealing telekom cables in Kampung Banggol, Mengabang Telipot here this morning.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man, was found by the road side in the village by a police patrol unit who went to investigate after being informed by a member of
the public at 3am.

State CID chief ACP K. Manoharan said also found with the suspect were two rolls of cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia and a motorcycle believed to be
used by the suspect.

He said the suspect who was unconscious was sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) here for further treatment.

“We have obtained a report from a Telekom Malaysia technical officer on the matter and confirmed the stolen cables belonged to Telekom.

“We are still investigating as to whether the suspect was operating alone or otherwise,” he told reporters here today.

It is understood that residents in the village had been experiencing frequent telephone line disruption lately but did not realise that it was due to the work of individuals who were making a living by stealing cables.

Manoharan requested members of the public who saw the incident or information about the case to contact the nearest police station. – Bernama
