KUALA TERENGGANU, March 15 (Bernama) — The Terengganu government cannot assure that the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium (SSMZA) will be safe for use even after the debris from the roof which collapsed on June 2 last year have been cleared, said Terengganu Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Rahin Mohd Said.
He said this was because the impact of the collapse of the 2,500-tonne roof on the stadium’s structure had yet to be verified.
“I don’t want to say whether the stadium can or cannot be used after the debris have been cleared because the state government does not want to take a risk on this issue,” he told reporters here on Monday.
Rahin was commenting on complaints lodged by certain quarters including football coaches and managers over the unsatisfactory field condition at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium (SSINS) here.
The collapse of the roof of the SSMZA, merely a year after it was completed for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2008, had caused all football matches, including that of the Super League and the FA Cup, to be played at the SSINS despite its poor field condition.
Rahin also said that the SSINS, which was over 30 years old, was supposed to be demolished to make way for inner city development.
However, he said with the roof collapse incident, the plan had to be postponed.
Earlier, Rahin presented sports incentives amounting to RM10,300 to nine athletes who won medals at the 5th Asean Paragames Kuala Lumpur 2009.
Each athletes received between RM300 and 2,000.
