KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Immigration Department has detained seven Thai women in an operation at the Kampung Tiong Food Court, last night on suspicion of abusing their social visit passes.

State Assistant Director of Immigration, Mohd Shahrir Khalil said 20 of his officers were deployed to carry out the operation from 10.30pm following complaints from members of the public on the activities of these women, aged between 20 and 40, who worked as waitresses at a restaurant.

“We conducted observations after receiving complaints from members of the public who were feeling uncomfortable about the ‘friendly’ treatment given to the patrons,” he told a media conference last night.

He said that during the 15-minute operation, all the seven women were detained while having drinks with their patrons who gave their cooperation during the operation.

Mohd Shahrir said the department had issued summonses to the seven men, who were with the Thai waitresses during the operation, to appear as witnesses later.

All the seven Thai nationals had been sent to the Immigration Detention Depot in Ajil for further investigation under regulations 39B of the Immigration Act 1959/63. -BERNAMA
