KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu is aiming to bag 69 gold medals in next month’s 19th Sukma Games.
State exco for youth development, sports and non-governmental organisations Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the state is aiming to gain gold medals again in three sports – cycling, judo and archery.
Terengganu got 47 gold medals in the 18th Sukma Games.
“We are making every effort to realise this goal,” he said adding that the state has invested about RM8mil to train athletes for the sporting event, which will take place in Perak from Sept 12 to 22.
Over 700 athletes from the state will be competing in the upcoming games.
When asked if athletes will be offered any incentives to do better at the Games, Wan Sukairi said the state will need to consider the athlete’s development and achievements at the Games first.
“Our focus now is to achieve our gold medal target,” Wan Sukairi said.
He said this at an event to appoint custodians who will be responsible for each sports team competing in this year’s Sukma.
The custodians were selected among Members of Parliament, Assemblymen and senior government officials in the state and will be tasked to supervise and motivate the teams towards victory – thestar
