The appointment of new local councillors in Selangor will likely be delayed despite the term of 12 local councils in the state ending today due to a tussle for seats between Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and PAS.
According to a report by The Star, Amanah wants the Selangor government to appoint some of its party members as local councillors, believing the state administration should take into consideration the fact that the party holds three of the four MP seats in the state.
“Of course we have only two seats in the state legislative assembly. But three of the four Selangor MPs are from Amanah. So we hope that will be taken into account,” Amanah communications director Khalid Samad was quoted in the report as saying.
The Shah Alam MP also suggested that Selangor extend the tenure of high-performing former PAS councillors, who are now in Amanah, without taking into consideration their party affiliation.
When contacted, Selangor PAS information chief Mohd Prasad Hanif [Pic right] said the Islamist party would not negotiate with Amanah over seats for local council posts.
“Negotiations are between PKR, DAP and PAS. Amanah is not within our consideration,” he told The Star.
There are currently 288 local council seats with 120 seats given to PKR, 92 for DAP, 67 for PAS, and nine for the Orang Besar Daerah.-mmail
