KUALA TERENGGAU: Contractors engaged to build schools have been warned to keep to the construction schedule or face being blacklisted.
Terengganu education, science, technology and government transformation committee chairman Abdul Latiff Awang also issued a similar warning to contractors to ensure that building materials meet specified quality standards.
“We have to come down hard on errant contractors in view of numerous complaints on projects not completed on time or inferior materials used which had resulted in cracks and defects on buildings.
“Such actions may tarnish the credibility of the state government and result in huge losess with regards to repairs,” he said.
Latiff added that errant contractors would not be allowed to engage in future state government contracts.
“There are cases where even newly-built structures were cracked or broken.
“These weaknesses on the part of the contractors have resulted in the government being burdened with additional remedial costs,” said Latiff.
Latiff also called on the Education Department and the Public Works Department to constantly monitor commissioned contractors and take action against errant ones.
Latiff announced that the state government would spend RM45 million towards building a new school – Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal – in Kuala Nerus to cater for demand in the constituency.
Construction will begin in January and the project, complete with 30 classrooms, a laboratory, hall, surau and teachers’ room, will be ready by 2020.
