THE Terengganu state government must explain the recent spate of collapsing roof incidents throughout the state following the latest incident at Kolej Universiti Tati on Monday.
Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin said this was the third incident to happen with no action being taken against the contractors concerned.
“This reflects the collapse of moral values in the state government. There has been no action taken by them over the previous cases,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
He questioned how the roof of the Chancellor Hall at the university could collapse only 14 months after it was completed.
He said the Works Minister had given him assurance that errant contractors would be blacklisted.
He said he was shocked to learn that one contractor was still operating in the state although he had been blacklisted for an earlier collapsing roof incident.
He added that the contractor was responsible for the Kampung Batu Putihin Kemaman Mosque works. The roof of the mosque collapsed in October 2009.
Raja Kamarul claimed that the same contractor was also involved in the Kampung Binjai Kertas Mosque project in Hulu Terengganu, which saw a similar incident in May.
“How did they (the contractor) get other contracts? The company is still operating and has also completed several other buildings in Terengganu,” said the PAS MP, who quipped that Terengganu would now be better known as “Terengganu Darul Runtuh”.
He urged the state not to take the matter lightly as it involved public safety.
In June 2009, the roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium collapsed. It suffered further damage earlier this year when the steel structure holding up the repaired roof also fell off.
