The rights of non-Muslims will not be in jeopardy if PAS’s Private Member’s Bill is passed in Parliament, said Kongres Rakyat chairman Azmi Abd Hamid on Sunday.
“We do not ask for any reduction to civil laws; we do not touch them, the rights of non-Muslims will not be in jeopardy,” he said in a speech at a Hari Raya gathering of Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
He added that any concerns should be debated, saying that there is no reason for non-Muslims to worry as laws are not passed immediately.
“Look at Malaysia, we have Buddhist temples, Hindu temples and Churches. As a whole, other religions flourish and are very established,” said Azmi.
He added that all that is being asked for is for the Syariah courts to be established.
“But when we raise this issue it is as if the rights of others will be affected,” he said.
Similar views were shared by Sekretariat Ummat chairman Aminudin Yahya, who called for Muslim NGOs to be united in their support of the Private Member’s Bill.
He added that the media has an important role to play in educating the public on the Bill.
“Unfortunately, it has been manipulated by certain quarters – the first are those who are anti-Islam and the second group are Muslims who support liberalism,” said Aminudin. -thestaronline
