Pushing drugs for easy cash

KUALA TERENGGANU –  The lure of easy money has led many youngsters, mainly in their 20s, to become pil kuda traffickers.

The addictive stimulant also known as methamphetamine – a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol – is said to be sold at between RM20 and RM30 a pill here.

“The young peddlers could make at least RM2,000 a day by selling an average of 200 pills,” said Terengganu narcotics chief Supt Roslan Abdul Wahid.

“Despite the risk of facing the death sentence, these youths take the gamble as they could earn up to RM10,000 or more a month.

“They get the supply from neighbouring countries and drug syndicates are more than willing to make use of their resources.”

Supt Roslan said pil kuda and heroin were high in demand, adding that syndicates used to transport the drugs by boat through neighbouring waters but were now more daring to use air transport.

He said they had increased checks at the border areas and the various entry points into the state, with the close cooperation of their counterparts from other states and the public.

There have been 50 cases of drug trafficking reported from January to August this year, compared to 30 cases recorded over the same period last year.

The number of addicts during the period was 7,890, compared to 7,602 addicts caught last year. -TheStarOnline
