KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government will repair the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, which collapsed five years ago, at a cost of RM26.8mil involving 14 contractors.
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the repair involved spectator seats, lifts, suraus, basic amenities, electrical and mechanical systems.
“We need to improve the stadium as it has been abandoned for so long. The Public Works Department (PWD) must ensure that the contractors appointed are competent.
“The work must be distributed to several capable contractors who are experts in their respective fields.
“Incompetent and inexperienced contractors will not be hired as we do not want the incident to be repeated,” he told a media conference which was also attended by state JKR director Datuk Shafie Mohamad.
Ahmad Razif said the PWD has given its assurance that the stadium could be used by January to host FA Cup football matches with 35,000 crowd capacity.
He said since the repairs would not involved a portion of the roof and flood lights, the matches could only be held during day time.
“The PWD has pledged all repair works at the stadium will be completed by June next year. Nonetheless we are seeking a formula to repair the flood lights and the stadium roof after this,” he said.
The stadium was completed in 2008 to host the Malaysia Games. It collapsed on June 2, 2009, one year after it was used. -thestaronline
