KUALA TERENGGANU: The price of a coconut has gone up to between RM2.50 and RM3 here.

It used to sell between RM1.20 and RM2 until a few days ago.

Many consumers, especially housewives, said they were shocked by the sudden increase. Coconut milk is selling at RM9 per kilo.

Many retailers claimed there was a shortage of coconuts.

Retailer Yusof Abdullah, 43, said he had to sell at a higher price because suppliers were also “overcharging” him.

Nasi dagang seller Fatimah Awang, 46, said she had to raise the price of her dishes because of the higher cost of ingredients, including coconut.

The Federal Agricultural Marketing Au-thority (Fama) said it would investigate the matter.

Its state director Hasan Jusoh said Fama would source supply locally and from abroad to solve the problem. – Bernama
