KUALA TERENGGANU – A man was arrested while his accomplice managed to escape during a botched attempt to steal a car which belongs to the Imam of Masjid Assalam in Batu Rakit, here, on Monday.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Idris Abdul Rafar said a mosque goer alerted the police that he saw the suspects smashing the Proton Iswara’s window during the Subuh prayer at 6am.
Idris said a police team rushed to the scene and managed to arrest a 31-year-old man from Pasir Putih, Kelantan.
“His accomplice in his 30s escaped to a jungle nearby.
“The suspect tested positive for drug abuse and was being held to assist investigation. We seized an assortment of tools such as a hammer and cutters from the car of the suspects, which is also a Proton Iswara,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Terengganu police station today.
Idris said the case was being investigated under Section 379A/511 of the Penal Code for attempted vehicle thefts. He urged those with information of the other suspect to call the nearest police station.
“There were 33 cases of attempted car thefts and 12 motorcycle thefts reported at mosques in Kuala Terengganu in the first four months of the year,” he said.-nstp
