Pas has called for a broader political framework involving Malay-Muslim forces beyond Umno, saying the two parties should instead serve as the “axis” of a wider unity agenda.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the agenda should include other groups that shared common principles and objectives on Malay-Muslim interests, national stability and the welfare of all Malaysians.
“Pas and Umno are two major forces in Malay-Muslim politics, and both have an important position and influence to become the axis of the agenda for unity.
“However, if this idea is limited to cooperation between the two parties, we may inadvertently marginalise other groups that also play a role and have influence in society,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Tuan Ibrahim said Malaysia’s changing political landscape could warrant consideration of a new and broader political framework or coalition.

He said younger voters, who now make up a significant portion of the electorate, were not necessarily bound by the political history and calculations of previous generations and wanted solutions to future challenges rather than a repetition of past disputes.
He said any new framework must address longstanding issues including excessive racial politics, weak national unity, corruption and abuse of power, the influence of cartels and vested interests, declining leadership morality and disputes that continued to strain relations between communities.
Tuan Ibrahim said differences in the history, approach and political agendas of various parties should not necessarily prevent cooperation.
“These differences need to be managed wisely so that broader matters can be agreed upon without any party having to lose its identity,” he said.
He also said Islam, as the religion of the Federation, together with the Quran and Sunnah, should form the basis of the unity agenda, while stressing that an Islamic political approach must protect the rights of non-Muslims.
Tuan Ibrahim acknowledged that some members of society remained concerned about Islam-based politics, saying such concerns could not be addressed through slogans alone.
He said confidence had to be built through explanation, political approaches, and examples of governance showing that Islamic principles of justice could protect the rights of all citizens.
He said Pas and Umno therefore had a major responsibility to show that Malay-Muslim unity was not intended to dominate or deny others’ rights, but to build political strength capable of governing fairly, strengthening national stability and ensuring the welfare of all Malaysians.
“The unity being built is also not merely to secure victory for Pas and Umno. Party victory is only a means.
“The greater objective is to build political strength capable of uniting the people, upholding justice and offering a better future for the country,” he said.
Tuan Ibrahim said the ultimate objective should be to build a Malaysia that is fair, stable and prosperous, with Islam serving as a guide and a source of mercy for all citizens.NST
