MACC nabs 10 ‘big guns’ in scrap metal graft

KEMAMAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency has arrested 10 people, comprising enforcement officers from the State Department of Environment and policemen for allegedly soliciting grafts from scrap metal traders in the district.

The suspects were nabbed in separate raids in Kuala Terengganu and here on Tuesday, following a tip-off that several ‘big guns’ from the state were extorting the traders if they wanted to continue disposing off second-hand materials to procurers without interference from enforcement agencies.

It is also learnt that the 10 had been operating as a syndicate since last year when they solicited substantial amaounts for each transactions that the traders conducted.

MACC’s Investigation Unit director Mustafar Ali said all the suspects were nabbed for allegedly demanding bribes between RM500 to RM5000 from the traders.

He said three enforcement officers were detained in Kuala Terengganu while the rest including the policemen were nabbed here.
