SHAH ALAM – The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has advised Muslims not to be hasty in criticising the fatwas, or edicts, without fully understanding its contexts.

“The Muslim community must be confident and united in their thoughts in understanding all the principles of Islam which it (their understanding) must include in overcoming the ideologies and political interests (of certain quarters),” said the Ruler in his opening remarks at the Syariah Criminal Code Seminar’s opening ceremony here today.

“As a religion which is complete and whole, Islam practices moderation in all aspects which encapsulates of akidah (faith), syariah or even akhlak (one’s behaviour). This form of moderation is the main principle which differentiates Islam from other religion,” the Sultan said.

The Ruler added: “As stated in the Quran, the moderation concept is stated clearly which is practised in Islam in all aspects of our daily lives.

“On this notion, the Sultan said that he did not wish to see the nation’s peace, unity nor the development which has been built and defended to be destroyed by certain parties “which have been influenced by outside extremists’ elements.

“The Sultan also reminded that a fatwa is not determined by a mufti only but is decided by the Fatwa Council (Jawatan Kuasa Fatwa) which consists of scholars and also professionals who are experts in each of their specialized fields, including jurisdiction.

He then urged for Muslim scholars in Selangor to conduct discussions during the seminar in the hope that all objectives which have been outlined would benefit Muslims in all aspects
