KUALA TERENGGANU: Construction sites of the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge, as well as the new city council building, had to be closed temporarily after cases of dengue fever were detected there.

The sites were closed for eight days last month.

State Health Department director Dr Mohammad Omar said nine foreign workers at the sites, aged between 22 and 49, were suspected of contracting the disease after showing clinical signs of dengue such as fever, headaches, joint pain and pain behind the eyes.

“Two of them tested positive and were warded at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah here while the other seven received outpatient treatment,” he said.

The department later conducted checks at sites where it found aedes breeding grounds and high mosquito population.

The department then took steps to control and prevent the disease from spreading including fogging, destroying Aedes breeding grounds and held a gotong-royong to clean up the affected areas.

Up until June 30, there have been 102 dengue cases in Terengganu, which has decreased by about 37% compared to the same period last year where 164 cases were detected.- thestar.
