HULU TERENGGANU: Police crippled a gang headed by a man who led a life of crime for the past 17 years and has been terrorising Hulu Terengganu residents recently.
Hulu Terengganu OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said four men and a woman aged between 29 and 37 were arrested at a home in Telemong in an early morning raid on Wednesday (Aug 1).
“We also seized five mobile phones and a car with a fake registration number,” he said at a press conference here Thursday.
He said the group, notoriously known as Geng Dek, was arrested in connection with a robbery in Kuala Berang.
In that incident on June 16, the gang had stopped a motorcyclist and his pillion rider who were on their way home.
“The group stopped them about 400m from their destination by crashing their car into the motorcycle,” he said.
The group then proceeded to hit the rider, injuring him in his face and head, and also tried to garrotte the pillion rider.
“They managed to get away with the rider’s handphone,” DSP Mohd Adli said.
The group is also believed to be responsible for other crimes including breaking and entering, as well as criminal intimidation, in June.
“The gang is pretty well known around these parts and we believe the head has about a criminal record over 12 offences,” he said, adding that the gang leader has been committing crimes since 2001.
All the suspects have been remanded for seven days from Aug 1 to help with investigations.
All of them also tested positive for drugs.
Separately, police also arrested a 28-year-old man for possession of a homemade gun.
DSP Mohd Adli said the man obtained the weapon from a foreigner near Lake Kenyir, and is believed to be using it for illegal hunting.
“The gun had been in his possession for about two years and we have sent it to the forensics unit for further tests,” he said, adding that the self-employed man has been remanded for three days.
