ALOR SETAR: Kedah PAS has stepped into the state DAP fray by advising its members to accept the appointment of Zairil Khir Johari as the interim state committee chairman.

State PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the DAP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) must have its own reasons for appointing the committee.

He said PAS, as the “older sibling” in the Pakatan Rakyat in Kedah, feels that the problem should be resolved quickly to avoid any problem in the state’s opposition coalition.

“I cannot interfere in the running of DAP, but I can only advise them to solve the problem,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

He was commenting on the protest by former state DAP committee members on Friday on the appointment of the committee by the DAP central leadership.

The committee chaired by Zairil, who is Bukit Bendera MP in Penang, was appointed in June after the last general election.

Former Kedah DAP treasurer Law Theng Hoi was reported as saying that the committee was set up without consultation with state DAP members.

Former Kedah DAP chairman Lee Guan Aik said the members have the right to protest because they were not happy with the CEC’s decision.

Lee said he was awaiting the investigation by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) into the issue based on the two letters that he had sent in July and recently.

“Until the ROS makes any decision, I believe that I am the legally elected state DAP chairman,” he said.

Lee had earlier questioned Zairil’s appointment to replace him as the democratically-elected state chairman during the 2010 annual general meeting.
