“On 5 May, parliamentary elections are taking place in Malaysia. We call on all those involved to ensure free and fair elections in Malaysia. This includes a fair election campaign in which all parties are able to campaign for votes without impediment.
“Manipulation of the electorate through intimidation, vote-buying or attempts to hinder the candidates have no place in a democratic election. Electoral observers must be able to carry out their work unimpeded,”
For the first time since Malaysia’s independence in 1957, polls predict that there is a real chance of a change of government. This possible change of power should not create concern, since it is a sign of a democracy which is developing.
