The Terengganu Government will take several short-term measures soon to overcome the problem of clean water supply, especially for residents in Kemaman and Kuala Nerus.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said among the steps included construction of several new plants at the two districts to complement the existing plants.

“Apart from that, in Kemaman, we are using the Petronas water treatment plant to process the raw water we supply, and Petronas will channel the clean water back to us,” he told reporters when commenting on the potential critical water supply problem at the end of the year.

He said this after presenting excellent education and sports incentives to the Terengganu Indian community here today, which was attended by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

Ahmad Razif said the problem in Kuala Nerus would be mitigated by drawing water supply from water treatment plants in Setiu to parts of Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu.

He said for long-term solution, the state government needed RM1 billion to construct four new dams in Kemaman while RM400 million was required for a dam in Kuala Nerus.

“We need a rather large allocation to solve the water problem in both districts and we are studying the matter,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Razif said Syarikat Air Terengganu Berhad was also taking steps to replace old pipes to reduce loss of clean water.- BERNAMA
