In a strong signal of PAS’ unhappiness with DAP, the ulama wing approved an emergency motion to sever ties with DAP, but agreed that PAS should remain with Pakatan Rakyat.
The motion, which was tabled by PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik, was supported by all 644 delegates during the ulama muktamar (assembly) here yesterday.
He said DAP had breached Pakatan’s conditions for the tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) following its attacks on PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
During the debates, Selangor delegate Rizuan Ahmat criticised PAS leaders who kept silent despite the attacks against Abdul Hadi.
“These people are more biadap (rude) than DAP because they chose to agree with DAP.”
Sabah delegate Mohamad Soi said PAS would soldier on without PKR and DAP on its side.
Dewan Ulama chief Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamed had warned delegates at the assembly earlier that DAP’s provocation could end the tahaluf siyasi in Pakatan.
“DAP has cut ties with the PAS president, but not with PAS. This is DAP’s divide-and-rule plan to bring PAS under its control,” he said.
Dr Mahfodz said DAP had indicated its interference in the upcoming PAS elections by assuming that its position in Pakatan would be decided after the party assembly.
“This is interference to influence PAS members to choose a leader who will kowtow to DAP,” he added.
Dr Mahfodz said it was time for PAS delegates to elect ulama leaders in today’s party elections.
He also took a swipe at PKR, claiming that it was responsible for the ongoing friction between Pakatan parties following the “Kajang Move” because PKR did not seek agreement from PAS.
“This was followed by the replacement of the Selangor mentri besar.”
In George Town, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng challenged PAS to back up the allegations with evidence.
“PAS has always been saying ‘jangan fitnah, dosa besar (do not slander, it’s a big sin)’, so jangan fitnah. Show us the proof,” he said at a press conference in Komtar yesterday. -thestaronline
