There is no need for DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang to panic over Pas’s call for a Royal Commission Inquiry (RCI) to probe the Memali incident in 1985.
Pas information chief Nasrudin Hassan said Lim should be aware that the Islamic party was pushing for the RCI, despite claims that the incident was sparked by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s speech in 1981, dubbed “Amanat Hadi”.
Nasrudin was responding to Lim’s statement yesterday, in which he urged Hadi to testify during the RCI and explain the impact of the “Amanat Hadi”.
The incident took place during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tenure as prime minister.
“Pas had requested for a RCI to be formed, so there’s no need for Lim to panic.
“Once it is formed, Pas will give its cooperation.
“Lim is trying to divert people’s attention from this issue to defend his master, Dr Mahathir,” he said yesterday.
Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan on Monday welcomed the government’s readiness to set up a RCI to investigate the incident, adding that the party would form a special committee to look into the welfare of Memali victims.
The Memali incident saw 18 people, including four policemen, killed and several others injured following a police operation to arrest Ibrahim under the abolished Internal Security Act for deviant teachings.
