KOTA BARU: Bersatu remains a legal component party of PN, despite Pas halting its political relationship with the party.
PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Bersatu’s status as a component party could not be denied from a legal and constitutional perspective.
“As secretary-general, I can confirm that legally, Bersatu is still a component party of PN.
“We cannot deny that from the constitutional perspective. But morally and politically, that is why I use the word ‘technically’ — Bersatu has become disconnected from PN,” he said when met today.
Takiyuddin, who is also Pas secretary-general, said there were two separate contexts that needed to be distinguished — the relationship between Bersatu and Pas, and Bersatu’s relationship with PN.
“Bersatu’s decision to use its own logo during the recent Negri Sembilan election and field candidates under its own banner showed that the party had effectively distanced itself from PN.
“For us, technically, they have left. Secondly, they fielded candidates under the Bersatu banner, not PN.
“So, there was no longer any political understanding between Pas and Bersatu. It is closed,” he said.
However, Takiyuddin said that Pas had deliberately chosen to describe the move as having “halted” its political relationship with Bersatu, rather than saying that the relationship had been severed.
“We use the words, ‘we ceased the relationship’. We stopped our political relationship with Bersatu.
“We do not say we have severed it. We say we have halted it,” he said.
On Friday, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the rift between Pas and Bersatu had widened further after Pas declared that the door to reconciliation between the two parties was now closed.
He said the stance followed Bersatu’s decision to contest against PN in the Negri Sembilan election on Aug 1.
The Marang member of parliament added that the decision was compounded by statements from Bersatu leaders regarding potential cooperation with PH ahead of the Melaka election.NST
