Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has received a letter from Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan notifying the reappointment of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin as opposition leader.
“Yes, I have,” Johari said in a brief reply to the New Straits Times.
Hamzah, who is also the Larut member of parliament, will occupy the opposition leader’s seat opposite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, according to the Dewan Rakyat’s latest seating arrangement updated on June 19.
Hamzah will sit beside Kemaman member of parliament and PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
Samsuri was briefly appointed to fill the vacancy following Hamzah’s resignation as opposition leader on April 12 after he was sacked by Bersatu on Feb 13.
However, Takiyuddin submitted a notification on June 18 informing the Speaker of Hamzah’s reinstatement following a meeting involving 62 MPs a day earlier.
Indera Mahkota member of parliament Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah told the New Straits Times that Hamzah’s reappointment was supported by all 43 Pas MPs and 19 MPs aligned with Hamzah’s “Reset” movement, including himself.
The 19 Reset MPs include Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (Beluran), Zakri Hassan (Kangar), Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu), Roslan Hashim (Kulim Bandar Baharu), Datuk Khlir Mohd Nor (Ketereh), Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah) and Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang).
Also part of the movement are Datuk Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu), Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor), Fathul Huzir Ayob (Gerik), Azahari Hasan (Padang Rengas), Nordin Ahmad Ismail (Lumut), Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah (Rompin), Kalam Salan (Sabak Bernam), Datuk Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah) and Muhammad Islahuddin Abas (Mersing).
